The Gaslight Anthem With Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen continues to prove his relevance to younger bands and just come across as a cool guy. At Glastonbury last weekend here joined The Gaslight Anthem for "'59 Sound".

"It's Boss Time"

Bruce Springsteen ordered America to "step away from the guacomole" and "put down the chicken fingers" at the start of his Super Bowl Halftime Show. Then the E. Street Band ran thru classic tracks 10th Avenue Freeze Up, Born To Run, Glory Days and new track Working On A Dream (with a gospel choir). Throughout the set Bruce brought the Rock Star moves of a younger man sliding across the stage, hopping on the piano and spinning his guitar around his back.

Boss Worship

It's been a pretty good few months for Bruce Springsteen. His buddy Obama is the new president, he's playing the Super Bowl later this week and he just put out a new album. One thing that has been interesting is how the "Boss" has become name checked by the cream of Indy music with bands like The Arcade Fire, The Hold Steady and the National giving Bruce his do. Two other big Springsteen fans are Ted Leo and The Gaslight Anthem who covered his songs for Pitchfork.

Arcade Fire - Born in the USA

The Arcade Fire perform a song by their buddy Bruce Springsteen at the Obama Staffers Ball. With this whole renewed spirit of patriotism it seem only right that they would play "Born in the USA". Unfortunately the camera guy insists on singing the hook of the song throughout the video.

A Liberal's Wet Dream

It looks like Bruce Springsteen will be performing as part of Obama's Inauguration festivities. The Boss will be performing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on January 18th. Having the voice of the "working man" performing at the same place MLK gave his I Have A Dream speech for our first black presidents makes my inner liberal all tingly!!

Vinyl Archeology

One of my favorite things to do is to dig through the used records bins at my favorite record stores. This week I found: Brian Eno - Music For Films, Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger, Tammy Wynette - World Of, Pink Floyd - Animals, Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park.

Working On A Dream

Bruce Springsteen (aka: The Boss, Obama's BFF) will be releasing a new album next month just 15 months after his last record. This a record pace for Spingsteen. One motivating factor was the inspiration he felt after writing a song call "Love in the Time of Bush". And you thought Love in the time of Cholera was rough.

Music To Torture By

Apparently music is being used as a form or torture (or enhanced interrogation if your Bush) at U.S. prisons in Iraq and at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. The process involves subjecting a prisoner to extremely loud songs played over and over for hours, days, weeks and even months at a time. This tortures greatest hits consists of songs by Nine Inch Nails, Bruce Springsteen (Born In The USA, of course), Eminem, Dr. Dre and cartoon music such as Barney and Sesame Street. Trent Renzor for one is not happy about this. From his blog:

It's difficult for me to imagine anything more profoundly insulting, demeaning and enraging than discovering music you've put your heart and soul into creating has been used for purposes of torture. If there are any legal options that can be realistically taken they will be aggressively pursued, with any potential monetary gains donated to human rights charities. Thank God this country has appeared to side with reason and we can put the Bush administration's reign of power, greed, lawlessness and madness behind us.

Several artists including Massive Attack and Tom Morrello of Rage Against The Machine have banded together to form the organization Zero dB whose goal is to prevent the use of music as torture.

The Gaslight Anthem

Even after reading some positive reviews I was weary of this band due to their connection to the Mall Punk scene. Well there was nothing to fear because they have more in common with Bruce Springsteen, Sun Records and Motown than with poser punk boy bands. Definitely recommended for fans of Social Distortion, Bruce Springsteen and Rockabilly.
